Dromoland Castle: Ireland’s Royal Retreat

If your vision of Ireland includes rolling green hills, ancient stone walls, and staying somewhere that feels straight out of a fairy tale, Dromoland Castle should be at the top of your list. This 16th-century estate in County Clare isn’t just a hotel – it’s a journey back in time, with all the modern luxuries you could want.

A Castle Steeped in History

Dromoland Castle has been welcoming guests for centuries. Once the ancestral home of the O’Brien family – descendants of Brian Boru, the last High King of Ireland – it has evolved into one of Ireland’s most prestigious five-star hotels. Walking through the grand halls, past oil paintings and glittering chandeliers, you can almost hear the whispers of history in the stone walls.

Luxury With an Irish Touch

Today, Dromoland offers the best of both worlds: historic charm and modern comfort. Think canopy beds, clawfoot tubs, and window views that stretch across manicured gardens and a shimmering lake. Dining here is an event in itself – whether you’re savoring afternoon tea in the drawing room or enjoying fine Irish cuisine at the Earl of Thomond restaurant.

My Dromoland Experience

When I visited Dromoland Castle, I decided to make the most of its legendary activities. I had an incredible falconry experience – there’s nothing quite like watching a majestic bird of prey swoop to your gloved hand. I also tried my hand at clay pigeon shooting (and I wasn’t half bad, if I do say so myself!). Afterward, I joined my friends Gayle and Jeni for a luxurious high tea, complete with delicate pastries, finger sandwiches, and plenty of laughter.

Things to Do at Dromoland Castle

Beyond my own adventures, guests can explore the estate by horse-drawn carriage, play a round of golf on the championship course, or relax in the spa after a day of sightseeing. It’s the kind of place where you can be as active or as leisurely as you like.

Exploring Beyond the Castle

Dromoland is also a fantastic base for exploring western Ireland. From here, you can easily visit the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, and charming towns like Ennis and Lahinch. Whether you’re on a guided tour or exploring on your own, this part of Ireland is rich in scenery, history, and warm welcomes.
